The first chapters create two unusual young girls, both seemingly designed to be protagonists in a dual plot-line story that, I hope, will appeal to all readers with great imaginations who find acceptance and hope in books. The first girl, young Sarah Dove, can hear the books talking to her. One old, frayed book, a hand-written history of their small town, is particularly insistent. The second girl, foster child Grace Wheeler, is fiercely protective of her younger, dreamy sister Hannah, but more than willing to fight her way through life’s hard knocks. As the sisters are dropped at their last-chance home with a woman who seems to be able to see right into their hearts, Grace finds a book and a cat who both welcome her to a new life.
