Magical realism has always been a complicated genre for me, as it can very easily go wrong. Sure, you have books and movies such as Matilda, Penelope, and Pushing Daisies that are whimsical and great, but more often than not, the final product tends to disappoint me. I was wary going into this excerpt, but was pleasantly surprised. It was apparent from page one that Hawkins is an incredibly talented writer. Her characters were compelling, and I really enjoyed them. Both Grace and Sarah were so different, but I was intrigued with both of their stories. I'm really excited to read the rest of this novel, and look forward to its release!
