An incredibly beautiful and incisive story about a consort, a mapmaker, a djinn--and the impossible realm that will fulfill and save them, if only they can get there. Fatima and Hassan are nuanced, amazing characters who really undergo some difficult changes, and their story unfolds beautifully, half like a history and half like a fairy tale.

It would probably be good if the reader knew a little bit about the outline and/or history of The Conference of the Birds, though, because I can see it getting a little confusing. There are some mystical elements that really merit careful consideration that aren't usual to a fantasy novel, so be aware that this is not a book to gobble up--it's a book to savor.
