Throughout much of this book, I loved it. I loved the journey and the magic and the friendships and the self discovery and the discovery of the world. Fatima was a fantastic protagonist, and I loved her loyalty to her friend Hassan. I also found the jinn endlessly fascinating, as I've never read a character like his before.

But i think it went on about 50 pages too long, and it really lost me. I think the author was trying to make additional points about the value of friendship/teamwork and the power of enemies and redemption, but it really wasn’t necessary. The adventure was what made the book good. The rest was just dull and a little hard to conceptualize.

I also loved this look into a time and place I've never experienced before, and I love how this book combined historical fiction and fantasy.
