The Bird King is a sweeping tale that is sure to steal your heart and keep you coming back for more.

Set in fifteenth century Grenada and Spain during the reign of the last sultanate in Iberia, The Bird King captures breathtaking historical detail. The main character, Fatima, flees the Inquisition with her dear friend Hassan, The sultan’s cartographer, and a jinn named Vikram. With the Inquisition hot on their heels, they can’t stay anywhere long. The setting goes from palace to plain to rocky cave to the sea and beyond, following Fatima, Hassan, and Vikram as they seek freedom.

With all of the fleeing and hot pursuit, one would think The Bird King would be fast paced. It’s not. It’s actually agonizingly slow. And way too long. Despite being beautifully written, the overwhelming emotion I had upon finishing was relief that it was finally over.

Even though it wasn’t the best book I’ve read recently, I’m still glad I read The Bird King. G. Willow Wilson is an author of rare talent whose future books I plan to read.

Thank you to the publisher and Bookish First for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
