I was hesitant about this story at first, but am so glad I gave it a chance! The Bird King is a story of love, friendship, and freedom. The friendship between Fatima and Hassan is beautifully woven throughout the novel. Their adventures on their journey will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
The historical time period was very interesting to me. I have not read much set during the time period of the Spanish Inquisition, so this was an enjoyable foray into that time period. Reading The Bird King has sparked an interest to read more about this part of our history.
There is an element of magic to this story that brings to mind Renee Ahdieh and Roshani Chokshi, among others. I would recommend this story to fans of their work.
