"The bird king" is a historical-magical realism fantasy setting in royal court of Granada (1941). Fatima is a royal concubine and Hassan, her best friend mapmaker. When representatives of the newly formed Spanish monarchy arrive to negotiate the sultan's surrender, she becomes friend with one of the women - Luz, not realizing that Luz would see Hassan's gift as a threat.

The premise of this book was very good and the Genoese history was fascinating.
Beautifully written in vivid descriptions and being complex in world construction, the book is quite rich. Yet, the story was a little slow-paced and flat and also, the characters were great but not captivating or fully developed. I couldn't connect with the storyline, thus, unfortunately, I DNFed this one. Having said that, the cover is completely pretty.
