Sometimes reading the cover or first page is not enough to grab your interest----as I read past the first few pages-----G. Willow Wilson began to build the character --block by block of the main character. I realized she was a person who I would love to peal the blocks away and try to understand who she was and why she was. This was also a book a book that would lead me to map out the time period that was just briefly studied in my history classes, would lead to the history of homosexuality and end with slavery throughout the ages. I will admit that I would have passed the book by because of the cover--- a drawing of a slave girl in the lower left corner----a bird in the upper right corner showing a bird-eye's view of the magical maps that were traveled.
