I absolutely adored this excerpt! It has everything I look for in a fantasy/literary story. In particular, I've had good luck with recent other fantasy stories set in the Middle East, "City of Brass," specifically, comes to mind. The characters who were introduced were interesting and I enjoyed the small taste of bigger concepts that I'm sure will be explored further in the novel as a whole.
