I've read a few YA dystopian series--mostly those published when I was a teen. The Uglies, Hunger Games, and City of Ember come to mind. I could not get into this audiobook (this title was assigned to me as part of a YA literature course) and abandoned it pretty quickly. I hated the description of the leeches as I'm squeamish about blood and the constant repetition of the word "Belle" quickly wore on me. The protagonist is not very three-dimensional and actually quite unlikable. She was obviously "the Chosen One," but I could not tell you why. The worldbuilding is weak, making me think that the author is perhaps borrowing from another source or hasn't thought much past the general conceit of this universe. It was clear that the protagonist's racial or ethnic diversity (as alluded to in the cover) was an afterthought because it did not have an impact on the characterization or plot, and no authentic details were included.
