The Belles is a delicious, enchanting story about what is deemed beautiful and the cost one must pay to be earn the title of beautiful.
Camillia (Camille) is our star. She is a Belle: born beautiful and charged with making the Gris (everyone else) beautiful too. Her life’s ambition has always been to be the Favorite. She’d be prized and beloved by royalty and (practically) worshiped by the common people. A strange turn of events has placed her in just that spot....only things aren’t what they seem. The castle is full of slithering snakes and wolves in sheep’s clothing and Camillia is naïve and ripe for the picking. Hijinx, accidental death, and purposeful life follow and lead us directly into the next book, THE EVERLASTING ROSE (due to be released 3/2019).

Clayton does such a wonderful job painting a picture of the scenery and the world of Orléans. The scents she describes and attributes to each girl are so distinctive and memorable that I can also smell the lavender the Queen likes to wear, taste the numbing Belle-rose tea, even feel Signe’s little paws against my cheeks. I cannot wait to read book two, and pick up more from this wonderful author.
