Imagine a world where you could see a picture in a magazine and instantly change your looks to be just like it. This is a very unique fantasy! I loved this concept.
In this world, almost everyone is born gray with red eyes. Except the Belles. Not only do they have beautiful skin and hair color, but they can transform the rich courtiers to make them beautiful.
As each generation of Belles grows up, they are brought to court. Camellia wants most of all to be named “favorite” and serve the royal family. When she’s passed over for the role, she’s heartbroken. But when her sister Belle is disgraced and removed, Camellia finds that the position at court and the royal family itself may not be all she hoped for.
The main characters leap off the page. Camellia is both kind and headstrong, with a love of breaking the rules. It’s impossible not to root for her. I’d love to spend more time getting to know some of the more minor characters, but they may have a bigger role in the next book.
The descriptions of the palace and the court are enchanting. Messages are sent through balloons, and I loved the teacup elephants! I want one.
This is the first book in a trilogy, and I HAVE to read the others now. This story would make an amazing movie. Fingers crossed that that happens!
