This was a strong followup to Lavender House. Andy's character is developed further, but the mystery is independent of the first book, so this could be read independently. Though a third book is possible, there was no cliffhanger, which I appreciate.

As with the first book, the atmosphere was well written and the mystery was engaging without being graphic. I'd put this in the historical mystery category, rather than cozy, however, because aspects of it are unpleasant and there's not a lot of levity.

I liked the gentle romance aspects and the contrast between Andy's ex and his new love interest. The historical aspects were also interesting. The author did a good job explaining the challenges of being queer in a much less accepting time, including being judged by your peers for not being a person they see as an advocate.

I enjoyed this and would read a third.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and Bookish First for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
