After reading The Lavender House, I expected a lot from this book, and let me tell you, it surpassed that. The Lavender House was a 4 star book for me, but The Bell in the Fog was a five. I loved how compelling the characters were, especially Lee. I have only a few small complaints, such as how in a few instances, the drama felt a little exaggerated and out of place. Also, the combination of the past (I.e. James and Helen) and the present (Danny and Donna) didn’t mesh well together. It felt like Andy was working two separate cases at once. However, I loved the sense of community that was portrayed, and how the danger of the time was not underplayed. I would have liked an interaction between Andy and the police force, a larger one than what was demonstrated with Lou, but that would be more of a bonus, and had no bearing on the rating. I hope this series continues on, and would love to read more queer 1950’s detective novels.
