The Bell in the Fog had a lot to live up to after last year's Lavender House, and wonderfully, it is just as good as its predecessor. Set in 1952 San Francisco, in this one Andy has set up shop as a PI over the Ruby, and an unexpected blast from his past shows up as a client. This dives deep into the world of the era's queer establishments, and the raids and scrutiny they were subjected to. There is fierce loyalty and protection of the community in this one, even though Andy is facing a good bit of skepticism thanks to his previous career in the police force. Readers learn more about Andy's time in the navy and the experience and relationships he had at that time. This story has an incredible sense of atmosphere and well rounded characters, as well as a top notch mystery that's wrapped up in a satisfying way. I hope to see this series, and these characters, continue.
