This book is set in San Francisco in the 1950s where Andy Mills, a former cop turned PI who also happens to be gay (in a time when that was something that made you a "criminal"), is working a case for an ex-lover. This book feels like a classic detective novel, while also exploring deeper themes around what it's like to live in a time when many had to hide who they were in order to survive.

I thought the plot was well-done and enjoyed the twists of the case. I also enjoyed Andy's character and his progression through the book in coming to terms with his past. I only wish that the character dialogue and the relationships between different characters was explored a bit more.

I will note that based on the comments from other reviewers saying this could be read as a standalone, I chose to read this book without having first read Lavender House. I do agree that I feel this works well as a standalone, but if you'd like a bit more background on some of the characters it may be worth first reading Lavender House!
