This book reminded me of the book Last Night at the Telegraph Club, which I knew nothing about when the title caught my attention and which I ended up enjoying. Like that book, THE BELL IN THE FOG really captures the atmosphere of the 1950's without sacrificing any modern page-turning qualities. I had not previously read any books from author Lev Ac Rosen; I liked the fact that this book is thoroughly enjoyable as a stand-alone novel.
Main character Andy Mills is a gay man whose career as a policeman came to a crashing halt when he was caught in a raid of a gay bar. Now he is trying to make a living as a private detective. Unfortunately for Andy, his previous career makes him a little suspicious to other members of the LGBTQ community as well as a possible target for the guys that want to bully and bash gay men even though Andy had served his country in the military during World War II. The mystery aspect of the book is tied to Andy's military service because a man with whom he'd had a relationship is now an officer in the military, but his entire career is in jeopardy with recent and on-going blackmail. Someone has photos and is threatening to make them public. The author presents the story in such a way that readers in all walks of life can enjoy the story arc.
