While I didn’t read the first book in the Evander Mills series, the second book The Bell in the Fog was a pretty bland mystery that wasn’t very engaging. It felt like a series of events that happened repetitively, I didn’t care about the characters or the stakes at all. There was no tension when the main character was in danger and threatened with his life, he just went along his ways as usual with no sense of urgency, solving the case with no challenges in his way. The writing did not appeal to me, there wasn’t much emotion, which I prefer more of. Overall, it didn’t feel like a mystery novel, more like an exploration of Andy’s past, which isn’t bad, but not what I was expecting. I think it would have been more helpful for me to have read the first book, so I could understand Andy better. The setting was written well, and was very atmospheric. 3/5 stars
