I enjoyed how quickly The Bell In the Fog pulled me into the story, providing the perspective of living a queer life during and after WWII. I felt invested after 20 pages. The pacing and description were excellent. I just can’t shake the feeling that it’s not fully baked. It’s so close, like a meal that is slightly under cooked. It will still taste good, you will still enjoy it, but you know it can be better. There were a few passages in which the author repeated information already presented, e.g. how important it was for the women to have escorts into clubs. After it’s explained the first time, I don’t need it explained again a few pages later. It’s distracting. I think this level of attention to detail should be part of the editing and revision process, making me think the book was rushed and simply needs a polish.
