I love modernized historical fiction, where characters who were written out of history get to have a say. This reminds me a lot of Lavendar House - a gay detective during the golden era, navigating the "manly" world of the Navy and the police. In Lavendar House, the detective was trusted because he was gay. Here, we seem to have the opposite.
