I went in to this with very particular ideas about what type of story I was about to get. I knew vampires and from other vampire fiction they are often very dark, broody, sexual, and mysterious. With this being a teen novel I figured all of those descriptors were a given, but I was definitely let down. Celine was very drawn to Sebastian, but I really can't figure out why. He makes many references to being a monster, but then he doesn't do anything monstrous. Celine was also really boring.

I think if this was a contemporary novel she might have been given some more to work with as a character, but she kept up this irritating and repetitive monologue about a crime from her past. It didn't seem to matter that it was set in 1872 since the time period didn't seem to play much of a role in the story, or even the time period of New Orleans at that time. It could have easily been made into a modern Southern novel and been much better.

The setting of New Orleans was drastically underused. I should have been able to feel the vibrant culture and food. This could have been so much better and had a lot of potential.
