I greatly enjoyed this new YA read. The story contains elements of the supernatural, which I typically shy away from, but I have read Ahdieh in the past and loved her work so I gave this book a chance. I’m so glad I did!
The setting: 1870s New Orleans, near Mardi Gras time. The architecture, fashion, parades, and parties made for an exciting and beautiful backdrop to the story.
Strong female lead: Celine, while flawed, and running from her past, makes a great example of a strong female protagonist. The cast of characters surrounding her are interesting and complex as well.
Mystery: if you love a good murder mystery involving a serial killer, this is a great story to pick up. (Note: I do not like scary stories, and this book was not scary to me).
First in a series: I loved the twist at the end. It’s a great cliffhanger that leaves you needing to read the next installment!
