Ok, so, I am usually not a fan of any book that contains historical content, whether it is fiction or nonfiction. This novel revolves around Celine, who sailed over from France to New Orleans, Louisiana. Celine is going to live in basically a nunnery, where girls go to find their place within the church. Celine is traveling alone, although she does meet a friend named Pippa, who is living in the same nunnery and becomes a close friend of Celine. Meanwhile, the story switches back and forth between Celine's storyline and the storyline of a murderer in New Orleans who is killing off different women.

The two things that are important to recognize within this book are the setting and the characters. The author is a FANTASTIC job describing the setting. A lot of sensory detail was used and it really immersed me into the story. Another thing I really enjoyed and was honestly surprised about was the complexity of the characters. Celine has such an interesting, mysterious backstory I want to read more about and her friend, Pippa, is not at all who she appears to be. These characters really add to the story. The only critique I have of this novel is the transitions between Celine's storyline and the murders. I would have liked some indication of that storyline switch but that is just a personal preference. The dialogue feels natural (which is a big pet peeve of mine) and I can't wait to see where this story goes (the possibilities are endless!)
