I loved the setting of the story- New Orleans in the late 1800s. Our main character, Celine, has newly arrived from France. She is making a new path for herself in America. Her character is likeable as she is one who is smart, doesn't skip a beat, but also can be very foolish. Especially when she meets Bastian.
Bastian is very hard to like initially, but he grows on you. He is the leader of the 'cour de lions' and that is quite a job.
Now let's add the murders and mystery which makes everything fun! I was guessing for a long time as to who the villain was, and was surprised when he finally revealed himself.
I loved the supporting characters Odette, Pippa, and Michael. I hope we get to see more of them in the sequel. The ending left me sad, but I also could understand why things needed to happen the way the did to set up the next installment.
