"But I'll share a secret. In my years, I have discovered it is possible to be both disconcerting and delightful all at once."

When I heard a while back that this novel was going to be happening, I was so excited. I thought FINALLY after all of the vampire glitter jokes, brooding eternal teens, and Twilight knockoffs, a young-adult book is finally going to be doing vampires justice. I've been dying for some creeptastic brutal vampires for years now and after reading this excerpt, I definitely think this will deliver.

I've never read one of Renée Ahdieh's books before, so I have nothing to compare this to, but I loved the way she wrote it. Something about her language and the New Orleans setting made this feel like a young-adult Anne Rice novel and I LOVED IT. It was all so mystical and atmospheric that was perfect for the story. Plus, as someone who lives in the South I can say with certainty that Ahdieh created the perfect mood.

And the characters! We only meet a small handfull in the excerpt, but they definitely left an impression. I'm already completely in love with Celine with her carefree French attitude and mysterious past. Her friendship with the subtly spunky Pippa was cute to see too. And there was just a hint enough of creepy vampire to really pique my interest.

In just 50 pages Ahdieh got me completely hooked and I can't wait to see where this story goes!
