Right off the bat, I loved the first line of this sample. "New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead." I think New Orleans in the late 1800s is an inciting setting for this story. It is a city rich in magic, which makes it a unique, but appropriate setting for this conflict of "the darkest creatures of the night". I'm really not that interested in vampire books or romance books, but the setting has really captured my attention. I would be interested to see where this one goes.
