The only thing better than the magic of New Orleans is a book filled with fantasy and magic and set in New Orleans. I am absolutely loving all of the French-inspired young adult fantasy novels that seem to be hitting shelves of late — from Dhonielle Clayton’s The Belles, to Roshani Chockshi’s The Gilded Wolves, to Alys Arden’s phenomenal Casquette Girls series, to Gita Trelease’s delightful Enchantée — and The Beautiful sounds like a solid entry into this new trend.

Having been a fan of Ahdieh’s since I read Flame in the Mist, I’ve been meaning to get around to the rest of her books. I adored Flame in the Mist and the atmospheric writing and solid characterization and world-building, and just from this first look, I can tell that all of the elements that I loved from her previous work is solidly present in this one as well.

I will say that the most intriguing aspect for me is the historical setting and the murders. I absolutely love a good historical murder mystery, books along the lines of Stalking Jack the Ripper, and The Beautiful looks like it’s going to be right up my alley in that regard. Definitely adding this beauty to my #tbr ASAP, and I’ll be counting down the days until it’s released.
