There is something dark haunting the streets of 1872 New Orleans, as Marceline Rousseau is about to discover. Celine is no stranger to darkness, as she flees her former life, attempting to outrun a secret as-yet-revealed. The First Look revealed the presence of many secrets among the characters that have been introduced thus far, but so far the motives are remaining hidden. The chapter headings are clear, but I'll admit my lack of familiarity with the French language has left me guessing as to the meaning of a few phrases. I think the author has provided enough context to parse the meaning without that knowledge, but it is still disconcerting as a reader to worry that you are missing something important.
The cover is simple and matches the tone of the novel thus far. The hint of a magical underworld is tempered with the historical contexts that the author has provided. While not my typical fare, I think this story is off to a strong start and is likely to play well among fans of Charlaine Harris and Anne Rice.
