What is it about paranormal books and New Orleans? Does it stem from Anne Rice or is it because New Orleans is so different than the rest of the US. Regardless of the reason, it feels overplayed and honestly a little boring. I will say this however, Ahdieh's writing and description of the city itself makes it feel like its own character and gives the story a vibrancy that is unexpected.

I also LOVE vampire everything which makes sense considering my background with teaching vampiric folklore at university for the majority of my adult life but even with that, the setting just made it all seem a little....meh which is a shame.

The short amount of the story I was able to read had some ideas I really did like; a protagonist running halfway across the world of reasons unknown to the reader (nice use of setting up for the unreliable protagonist), vampire romance (always interesting if done in a not Twilight way) and the constant sense of mystery kept me reading. Do I think that this book will break the norms of paranormal YA romance? No, but that does not mean it isn't a potentially entertaining ride with some promise towards unexpected twists and turns.

If you want a quick review of the writing for this book it is like the title; cute, bland, safe, and overplayed.
