The first few paragraphs of The Beautiful reminded me of The Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare, one of my favorite books. And while it was similar--the time period, the clothing, and the dark tone--it was also unique. I liked that it's set in New Orleans, a town that I've actually visited and could envision. A town that perfectly conveys the mystery of the book.
