This is my first book by Amalie Howard. I love the fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast, and consequently, I also love re-tellings. There's something enchanting about someone who wears a visage- physical, mental, or that of outwards attitude to ward off pain and fear, that's overcome by empathy, understanding, and love. For those who believe love conquers all, this is a great example to follow.

I loved the characters in this story. Lady Astrid Everleigh is a woman to admire. She will do whatever is necessary, not for herself, but to protect her younger sister. I admired the way she went after Lord Nathaniel Harte, mercenary as it was. I will admit it took me longer to admire the Duke of Beswick, but he quickly grew on me.

While their chemistry is entertaining, I felt it was missing a certain je ne sais quois. I really enjoyed the story and seeing Astrid & Nathaniel find each other and a new appreciation for themselves, but at times the book seemed too over the top. I am intrigued by the secondary characters, and look forward to reading more in the Everleigh Sister Series and from Amalie Howard.
