I’m counting down the days until I can read the rest of The Babysitter! The preview left me longing to know “who-dun-it.” Nancy Bush creates delicious suspense while effortlessly delving into deeper themes of past vs. present, life vs. death, and appearances vs. reality. Where the preview ends, I’m left wanting to explore more than Emma’s attack. In just 50 pages, I’m invested in character relationships; I need to know: (1) how the relationship between Jamie and Emma develops over the course of the novel, namely, how their present relationship differs from that of the past and (2) the importance of the fact Jamie and Emma’s mother, Irene, continues to command influence over her daughters even after she dies.

In terms of the cover, I love the image of the girl in the window. I wonder who she is, what (or who) she sees, and what (or who) can see her too. I’m less satisfied with the red color of the blinds. I think something black or more muted would better reflect the subtleties of the novel within.
