This book was nothing what I expected but very enjoyable regardless. Told in alternating perspectives of a Lord’s daughter and the lowly museum worker send to guard the mammal collection temporarily housed at Lockwood Manor due to the high risk of destruction in London due to the war. It’s clear from the start that Lockwood Manor holds secrets but I found them not to be anything I was expecting. Stories say a ghost roams the halls and Hetty does find strange occurrences with her museum animals. This story is about the trauma we bury as children, the love we find, and the paths we sometimes have to make for ourselves. This was a unique story that was gripping in it’s own quiet way. I found myself rooting for Hetty and Lucy as the odds appeared more and more stacked against them. I truly enjoyed this story and highly recommend it.
