The Animals at Lockwood Manor follows a young woman named Hetty who is thrust into the position of overlooking the safe keeping of the mammal collection for a museum that is looking to protect it's pieces at the start-up of WWII. The collection is going to Lockwood Manor, a very large and rather empty old estate that is owned by Lord Lockwood. Due to the time period of this book, Hetty is often scorned and looked down upon by Lord Lockwood simply for being a woman. When animals start to go missing, Lockwood just dismisses the oddities and chalks it up to Hetty being a silly woman.
Hetty befriends Lockwood's daughter Lucy, who is dealing with the death of family members and the secrets hidden within Lockwood Manor.

Overall, this book dragged for me. Not a lot happens and the "spooky mystery" the book touts is not mysterious or scary at all. The writing is decent and it does shine a light (as most historical fictions do) on how war affects everyone and how people are forced to deal with it.
