I would say probably more of a 3 1/2, really, if that was an option. First, I *really* loved the beautiful cover on "The Animals at Lockwood Manor." I was excited to dig into it based on that alone, but was worried about the mixed reviews I've seen on this online. What followed was a dark historical fiction story (described as "gothic") set during World War II.
I thought this was well-written but wordy and literary in a way that I think won't be accessible for a lot of folks. For example, I don't think we usually see quite so many emdashes in text like this. It's either for you or it isn't I did appreciate the spooky factor here. It was enough to keep me reading, but overall, I thought this book was just okay.
