It's the beginning of World War II and Hetty has just been evacuated from London to Lockwood Manor with the natural history museum's mammal collection. She's charged with keeping it safe during the war. But once she arrives at Lockwood, she's not able to keep track of things quite as well as she hoped. Lord Lockwood, the owner of the manor, is rude, antagonistic, and actively dislikes Hetty. His daughter, on the other hand, is the beautiful Lucy Lockwood, who Hetty begins developing feelings for.

There are many parallels to Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea -- old rambling manor house, an attic room, crazy Caribbean wife, and a young girl who comes to the manor for a job and falls in love with one of the occupants. But also mixed in with a little LGBT romance that fans of Sarah Waters will love.

I would have rated this higher, but it dragged toward the end and could have been at least 50 pages shorter.
