This was a very unique and exquisitely crafted gothic mystery set in 1939 England. I loved the taxidermy creatures from the natural history, as they really lent to a spooky vibe. The writing was very smooth and easy to get lost in while the story played like a movie in my head. The reader really gets transported back to wartime England, hoping to be safe from bombings in the rural countryside. Yet, the focus isn't on the war, it's on the animal exhibits and it's curator staying at this estate with it's plethora of rooms.

The psychological aspect, from the stress of war time, and being alone with taxidermy animals in a giant house lent for the perfect gothic story. I loved when the setting and surroundings lend to the questionability of the sanity of the main character. Are these things really happening, or is the main character just losing herself to the isolation of her surroundings?
