Within the first few sentences there is already full mystery because I was unsure if the animals were dead or alive.
The more you read, the more eerie and ominous of a feeling I got. I could feel a strange and mysterious darkness looming around me as I read about the woman’s abusive ‘mother.’ I was given a vivid image of how Hetty was treated as well as how that treatment effects her as an adult. Or the mammoth skeleton scene which was so brief yet the most creepy out of the whole sneak peek. The idea these dead stuffed animals are to move is a huge game changer for me; highly implicative to Stephen King’s The Shining.
The cover is very eye catching and I was instantly curious what the book was about; however not what I would expect it to be had I seen it in a bookstore.
I absolutely adore the women politics that are tied in. The fact, also, our main character is a trail blazing 1940s female in a male dominating field that includes taxidermy is so punk rock.
