You know when you’re trying to remember something that’s just out of reach? Say the name of an actor in a show you loved, or the reason you went upstairs that you suddenly can’t remember (I’m 👵🏻 it happens 😂) - that’s how I felt this entire book.

Between the use of first and last names for a character, characters with multiple names, multiple characters referred to by the same names, multiple timelines and shifting POV I truly could not track what was going on. The characters weren’t fully developed or memorable, and I just constantly felt like I was grasping to remember exactly who was who and what was going on which made for an unpleasant reading experience. The ending was underwhelming and very ambiguous which definitely wasn’t worth the hassle to get there.

I had both the audio and physical copies and I still struggled to follow along no matter which version I attempted. I would say if you go for the audio, the narrator is great but you need to play very close attention. I’m sure if I’d been willing to take notes it would have helped but I wasn’t interested enough to make the effort. There were also some words and phrases repeated again and again which annoyed me.

I’ve seen great reviews for this book, but for me it was overly complicated, confusing and frustrating to read. There were some interesting ideas here, perhaps with a more streamlined format I might have enjoyed it more.
