I've enjoyed this author since receiving an early copy of The Whisper Man. The Shadows was my favorite of his so far. I was of course looking forward to The Angel Maker, and in it I found another engaging story, full of intrigue, questions, and surprises. Excellently plotted, taking seemingly random pieces and tying them all together by the end. The author's stories have a supernatural bent to them, and while this one does as well, it has different feel than the other two. This has a bit more of a philosophical question poised that gets you thinking beyond just the story itself.
There were a couple points I would have liked to have seen explored more and I'm not sure I particularily cared for many of the characters. But then, maybe that's the point. We have flawed characters, looking to change their future from what is supposedly written. This book moved more slowly, lacking some of the urgency I felt in others. Still, it's a quick read, as I was invested in seeing where the story was going.
It's more than a mystery. It's about fate and choice. The past and the future. Family, by blood or chance. Nature or nurture.
I look forward to each new book from this author.
