The cover was not at all what I expected. Without reading anything more about the book besides reviewing the cover, I expected some sort of crime and mystery.. but entering the story, I felt the hesitant and blissful reality of what a teenage relationship with overbearing parents can feel like. It turns out, though, that the feeling of unease and the first hook of the story was really just foreshadowing for the terrible events that awaited for main character Katie. The feeling of sadness of knowing that one small selfish and frivolous teenage action lead to such a terrible end.
The story then transitions to the perspective of Alan Hobbes, someone who seems to have strange powers of knowing. Then the perspective shifts again. I felt a bit confused here. There was so much going on, so much to figure out, when I really just wanted to know what happened to Katie. I feel as though their stories definitely tie together as the story progresses.
Overall, I would love to read more. The author has a great job at showing us what is happening, depicting the feelings and behaviors between people. I especially loved how good the author was at truly convincing us of who each person was. It takes a true talent to be able to accurately describe the perspectives of people across numerous generations/ages.
