With Ellen Hopkins’s, I know I am going to get a story full of emotion and hardships and resilience, and that’s no different here. Storm and Lake were easy characters to root for. These kids have been through so much, yet so much more kept comings I liked how this book showed the good and the bad the foster system and how each person is impacted differently by being placed in these situations. As always with her books, she doesn’t let her characters off easy, but there is always so much growth that happens between the beginning and the end of the novel. I did feel like the ending of the novel was a bit rushed. I think that the sparse verse here always adds to the story, but it can make ending the story completely difficult. But her writing is powerful and memorable and this book will stick with me for the long term like all of her other books have, even though it’s been 15 years since I’ve read some of them.
