This book, oof. It has an interesting plot, but the execution left something to be desired for me. I know it has a plot, but was unsure of what that plot was trying to be. I think a large part of the reason I found this book so difficult was the writing style. I understand this is pretty typical of the author, but as the first book of theirs that I’ve read, it felt very derivative of Vonnegut and I am unsure if that is a compliment. On the one hand, Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors, on the other hand, this book felt like a poorly executed attempt at his style. It did keep my attention and kept me reading, but when it ended I ultimately felt that there could have been clearer themes and the dialogue felt odd and clunky which made it difficult to become endeared to the characters. I did find the family dynamic interesting and even grew to appreciate the story being attempted but the ending left me wanting more conclusion and explanation.
I think there are people who will really enjoy this book, it’s unusual characters, and even more unusual delivery, but I don’t think I was the right audience for it.
