That opening is *chef's kiss* sci-fi perfection. While I find the heavy use of the "/" symbol instead of the oxford comma jarring, maybe that's an editing flaw? Otherwise the writing is good, the story is immediately interesting so I'm not concerned with slogging through a ton of sci-fi world building, which is nice for a change!
