Sweet Sorrow was a sweet nostalgic reminder of the excitement and wonder that accompanies that first young and innocent love. I thought the book was well written and had a wonderful balance of character development with the story that intertwines Charlie's life at 16, falling in love with Fran, with his life twenty years later, preparing to marry someone else.

You learn a lot about Charlie as a person and how this one summer helped to define who he was on the path to becoming. There was so much that happened in one short summer for him - family issues, friendships that were on the verge of change (because at that age after graduation, how could they not?!), and taking a risk with a theater troupe so that he could get to know a girl.

I couldn't help but float back in time with the memories of being 16 and all the feelings that come with that first infatuation - where you think you're in love and invincible.
