The opening of this move is very descriptive. Nicholls brings the reader into the scene right away. In the opening chapter Nicholls depicts a familiar scene—the final minutes on the last day of school. Nicholls gives voice to Charlie as he “experiences” those last agonizing minutes that we have all been apart of. However, the Nicholls takes a slightly different approach as Charlie, the narrator, stands on the outskirts of the excitement, watching from afar as the other students express the chaotic excitement of the beginning of summer. Nicholls then moves into Charlie’s future in the second chapter. We are able to see what happens to the boy who is not the center of attention in high school. What happens to this young man once he becomes an adult?
