I received an advance reading copy of this book. Even though I am older, I enjoy coming of age novels and YA books. This one was hard to get into. It is well written, but I think some of the characters could be developed a bit more. I would have liked a little more background information. The character of Charlie is complex, but I would have liked to learn more about his sister, for example. The story is quite dark. The family relationships are heartbreaking.
It did pick up a bit in the middle and I enjoyed finishing the book. The performance of the play was the highlight. I think the plot is interesting, but the overall atmosphere is too sad and depressing for me. I hope Charlie’s finds some joy in his future life.
