The start of the Supernova Era was also still really interesting and had me hooked. Then America stepped in and ruined everything. From the very first chapter with them until almost the end, I was annoyed and embittered by this book. It saddens me that this is how the world views us, that we become those people in a futuristic novel like this. Don't get me wrong, that's a pretty legit direction that we could potentially steer towards, but I'd like to hope that we aren't that far gone. The children's behavior from that point onwards was so far off from how it had been, not just out of character but also just out of any children's character that I've ever known, that I couldn't stomach it. I would think most children would have a healthy enough fear of death for the world to sink to that level of chaos. The book does repeatedly say that adults cannot comprehend the way a child thinks, but I think he stepped way too far over into the bizarre. It was so bad that I was no longer racing to get to the next plot point, but just to end the book and my misery. This might be a fantastic sci-fi novel for others, but as a mother I just couldn't handle it.
