A very interesting concept, one that I'd like to read more about. Thing is, it's awfully wordy in places- not something that usually bothers me but in this case I feel like it distracts a bit from the main story. I found myself hoping the narration would get back to the kids. Could be a good story, but would need to be committed to it- not going to be a quick read.
