“The only way to learn who you are is by copying someone else first.”

Super Fake Love Song is a YA novel about a boy who pretends to be the lead singer in a band.

Sunny Dae is a mega-nerd trying to make it through the day at his rich, white high school. Then his parents inform him their business friends are moving to the area temporarily and they volunteered him to show their daughter around school. Enter Cirrus Soh, who instantly mistakes Sunny for a rock band frontman.

“At first, our intro sounded like three trash cans full of shouting goats crashing down the side of an ancient-ass pyramid at different speeds.”

Sunny manages to convince his two best friends, who run a YouTube channel dedicated to making live action role-playing props, into being fellow Immortalists band mates. Sunny’s older brother, Gray, the actual (small time) rock star, comes back and after noting Sunny os pretending to be him in high school, volunteers to help the guys rock a talent show.

Along the way, there is romance and even a truce with the guys’ biggest school bully. Would that ever happen in real life? No. But it was the perfect palate cleanser after this (first) year of the pandemic. Yoon’s style and execution has really leveled up since his first novel. The jokes in this book landed and the character was so relatable, despite my limited knowledge of LARP.
